π Hours of Service RulesβΆ
πΊπΈ United States (federal FMCSA)
Limits differ by division. Bus = passenger-carrying, Truck = property-carrying.
| Limit | π Bus | π Truck |
|---|---|---|
| Max driving | 10 hrs | 11 hrs |
| On-duty window | 15 hrs | 14 hrs |
| Off-duty before driving | 8 hrs | 10 hrs |
| 30-min break | Not required* | After 8 hrs driving |
| Weekly (7/8 days) | 60 / 70 hrs | 60 / 70 hrs |
| 34-hr restart | N/A | Yes |
- Bus: No driving after 10 hrs driving OR after 15 hrs on duty β whichever first β until 8 consecutive hours off.
- Truck: No driving after 11 hrs driving or beyond the 14-hr window; 30-min break after 8 cumulative hours driving; 10 hrs off resets.
- *Passenger carriers have no federal 30-min break requirement β plan rest to stay safe and alert.
- The 14-hr truck window does not pause for meals or fuel. The clock keeps running.
π¨π¦ Canada (federal β cross-border tours)
Canadian limits apply the moment you cross the border, and are the same for buses and trucks. Switch the HOS calculator to π¨π¦ Canada when you cross.
| Limit | Canada (south of 60Β°N) |
|---|---|
| Max driving / day | 13 hrs |
| Max on-duty / day | 14 hrs |
| Must stop driving after | 16 hrs elapsed since start of shift |
| Off-duty before driving | 8 consecutive hrs |
| Daily off-duty (total) | 10 hrs (8 + 2, splittable) |
| Cycle 1 | 70 hrs / 7 days |
| Cycle 2 | 120 hrs / 14 days |
| Cycle 1 reset | 36 hrs off duty |
| Cycle 2 reset | 72 hrs off duty |
- You must take at least 24 consecutive hours off in any 14-day period.
- The 16-hour rule counts elapsed time since you came on duty β breaks included β not just driving or working hours.
- No US-style mandatory 30-minute break, and no US 34-hour restart β Canada resets by cycle (36 hrs for Cycle 1, 72 hrs for Cycle 2).
- These are the federal rules for operating south of latitude 60Β°N; special rules apply farther north.
π₯ Co-Driver HandoffβΆ
- Add a co-driver when approaching your HOS driving limit (~10 hrs bus / 11 hrs truck).
- Confirm the co-driver assignment with Dispatch before the run β it's billed separately.
- Co-driver events are created in Google Calendar with full tour details. Verify yours is on the calendar.
- Log the exact time and location of the driver swap.
- In a sleeper-berth team operation, each driver's off-duty berth time counts toward required rest.
𧽠Cleaning & Post-TripβΆ
- Complete the Cleaning checklist (Pre-Trip screen β Cleaning tab) at the end of every run.
- Remove all trash, wipe surfaces, restock supplies, empty and flush the lavatory (bus).
- Report low fluids, damage, or needed repairs to the Shop when you return.
- Tell the Shop your actual return time so fleet scheduling stays accurate.
β½ Fuel & ExpensesβΆ
- Keep every fuel and expense receipt β submit through the driver payroll/time Google Form.
- Log odometer at start and end of each leg.
- Note any DEF fill-ups and fuel card issues for Dispatch.

π Safety & Incident StepsβΆ
- Injury or accident: Call 911 first, then Dispatch. Do not leave the scene.
- Turn on hazards, set out triangles/flares, keep passengers safe and calm.
- Photograph the scene and all vehicles before anything is moved (if safe).
- Do not admit fault or discuss liability. Exchange info; give a factual report to Dispatch.
- For breakdowns, get to a safe shoulder, mark the vehicle, and call the Shop.
